Sasol employees are encouraged to vote for Sasol as our nomination confirms that we have not done this for glory or to share in the spoils of Women’s Football and Women Wheelchair Basketball. Sasol will continue to be a staunch supporter because we have always believed in the potential and the empowerment of women through sport.
Our partnership with South African Football Association (SAFA) that is now in its 15th year, has positively impacted the lives of young football-playing girls – making them believe they can participate in development football and also move from grassroots to professional fields because of the platforms such as Sasol League and the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana.
We have continued to build this narrative, sharing real-life stories of Sasol Football Alumni – who have donned the Sasol branded playing jersey in the Sasol League to now representing the country as Banyana Banyana players. These include the likes of Refiloe Jane, Thembi Kgatlana, Linda Motlhalo, Noxolo Cesane, Bambanani Mbane and others. These stories are a reminder to every young girl with a dream to play on the world stage that anything is possible through hard work and determination. A central theme that these athletes live by.
Our accolades and partnership with Wheelchair Basketball South Africa have also not fallen short from success. Since 2007, we have witnessed the evolution of South African women’s wheelchair basketball. Sasol believes that disabled sports represent the ultimate triumph of the human spirit. To overcome a disability and play any sport at its highest level is a remarkable achievement for anyone. A typical example – the South African Women’s u/25 wheelchair basketball team which are the current African Champions, will represent the African continent at the 2023 IWBF u/25 Women’s World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand. The South African Senior Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team is currently ranked 2nd in the African continent.
As Sasol, we are honoured to be a part of history in Women’s football and Women’s Wheelchair Basketball – from being the first corporate to believe in either of these sporting codes and being there, fully behind the teams when they made history.
