The atmosphere at the Sasol Solar Challenge was charged with excitement and determination as teams wrapped up the second day.
The sun was shining brightly, striking photovoltaic (PV) cells (cells that are made of semiconductor materials such as silicon and alloys of indium) that allowed the cars to flow. The sun-empowered vehicles continued to push the boundaries of engineering and endurance.
Teams Display Perseverance and Optimism:
As teams from around the world completed their second day of the challenge, many expressed a sense of accomplishment and excitement about the journey ahead. Teams had to contend with fluctuating weather conditions, minor technical setbacks, and the constant challenge of optimising their solar technology.
“Day 2 was another learning day. We struggled with our battery because of a quick voltage drop.” said Team Manager, Tommie Barkhuizen from Genuine JV. “We stopped to charge battery and it was time consuming but we look forward to day 3.”
Pleased with the collaborative atmosphere of his team, “Yesterday was a very good day! We followed our initial plan. We encountered some challenges with one of our convoy cars but we quickly made a smooth switch and it didn’t influence our competition strategic plan at all,” said Marijn Kalter, Solar Team Twente’s Challenge strategist.
Organiser Applauds the Teams’ Dedication:
Director of the Sasol Solar Challenge, Rob Walker was thrilled with the progress. Sharing his admiration for the teams’ commitment and persistence: “The innovation we are seeing this year is remarkable, day 2 showcased the resilience of the teams. From fine-tuning their solar panels to pushing through mechanical challenges, their determination is inspiring. This is what this event is all about—promoting innovation, mobility, and teamwork.”
Sasol Highlights the Importance of Solar Innovation:
Sasol executives were present at the event to witness the ongoing challenge and to offer their support.
“We are proud to sponsor an event that not only promotes cutting-edge technology but also raises awareness about renewable energy and sustainable transportation,” said Sasol Vice-President of Group Brand and Communication, Elton Fortuin, “These teams are pioneers, and their work will pave the way for future advancements in green technology. As the Sasol Solar Challenge continues, teams are expected to face increased pressure as they fine-tune their vehicles with the hope of reaching the finish line in Cape Town.
With favourable weather conditions forecasted, Day 3 promises to be even more exciting, as teams fight for position.
Brunel Solar Team – Nuna 125 and Solar Team Twente – Rex XI both finished day two challenge by 930.9 kilometres. Innoptus Solar Team – Infinite took second place by 922.4 kilometres.
