The 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge (SSC) has reached an electrifying conclusion as teams crossed the finish line yesterday, marking the end of an epic 7th day of the challenge that spanned thousands of kilometres from Secunda, Mpumalanga, to the scenic town of Riebeek Kasteel in the Western Cape.
The event saw solar-powered vehicles navigate South Africa’s diverse and challenging landscapes, testing the limits of innovation and sustainability.
Among the teams who have shone brightly throughout the competition are the South African participants: The Rarz, CUT Seilatsatsi, EVNXT, Genuine JV, Cape Diem and UNISA, they have, captured the hearts of the nation with their resilience, passion and technological prowess. Their achievement in reaching this stage has been a source of immense pride and joy for all involved, representing not just a triumph of engineering but also a step toward a greener future.
Reflecting on the importance of the event, Sasol Solar Challenge Event Director, Rob Walker, expressed his pride in the local teams: “Seeing our South African teams reach day 7 finish line in Riebeek Kasteel is a moment of tremendous joy. They have shown that South Africa is capable of world-class innovation and teamwork. This competition is not just about who wins, but about how we push the boundaries of sustainable energy and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.”
Over the past week, the teams have navigated through breath-taking landscapes, from the open roads of the Highveld to the lush valleys of the Western Cape. Today’s final leg into Riebeek Kasteel was particularly stunning, as teams passed through the rolling hills and vineyards that characterize this historic region.
Covering more than 10 000 kilometres combined, the teams have driven from Secunda in Mpumalanga through small towns, open highways, and mountain passes, all powered by the sun. Along the way, they have demonstrated the remarkable potential of solar energy in addressing the world’s energy needs.
The 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge has once again highlighted South Africa’s growing role in sustainable innovation, and with local teams reaching the finale, it is a testament to the country’s potential in the global green energy revolution.
