Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana has qualified for the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament following their 2-0 win over Burkina Faso at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Monday 4 December 2023.
The team booked their ticket to next year’s WAFCON tournament in Morocco, after beating the Western African team 3-1 on aggregate, this is after they secured a goal away from home in the first leg of the qualifiers last week in the Ivory Coast.
From the opening whistle, Banyana Banyana demonstrated their skills on the field, displaying a blend of technical ability and strategic play. The team’s attacking force was persistent, putting the Burkina Faso defence under constant pressure resulting in a goalless first half from the two teams. Linda Motlhalo broke the deadlock in the 56th minute giving the South African team a lead much to the pleasure of the fans. Nicole Michael added to the scoreline in the 86th minute, denting Burkina Faso’s chances of getting back into the game.

The match also served as a send-off match to Janine Van Wyk, who hung up her boots after breaking records, becoming the highest-capped player in Africa, male and female with 185 caps. Janine bowed out in the first half receiving a standing ovation from the fans who have been inspired by her contribution to women football.
