Team South Africa storms in the Semi’s at the 2026 IWBF Africa Championships

The South African Wheelchair Basketball national men’s and ladies’ teams have successfully navigated their way to their respective semi finals at the 2026 IWBF Africa Championships in Luanda, Angola.

Both teams have been in fine form all tournament long losing only one match each in the round robin and group stages, a 48-56 reverse against highly fancied Morocco for the Sasol AmaWheelaBoys on Saturday and a 35-60 loss against Algeria for the ladies on Tuesday evening.

Tuesday’s result for the Sasol AmaWheelaBoys against an inspired home team backed by a ferocious home support placed them firmly as one of the favourites for the title that will be decided on Thursday evening.

The semi-finals scheduled for Wednesday, 1 April will pit the Sasol AmaWheelaGirls against Angola in the second semi-final at 17h30 (SA Time) in the ladies’ competition with the winner facing either Algeria or Morocco in the championship game on Thursday.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, the Sasol AmaWheelaBoys will line up against an unbeaten Algeria side in the first semi-final at 18h00 (SA Time) with the winners going on to face Senegal or Morocco who will square up in the other semi-final.

The continental showpiece event will see the winners gain automatic qualification to the 2026 IWBF World Championships in Ottawa, Canada in September while the runners up take part in a playoff tournament in Spain to try and qualify.
